He was tired from all the hard work, so he gave it to his young student Fionn MacCumhaill to cook for him.

Fionn burned his thumb when he turned the big fish over while he was cooking. When Fionn put his thumb in his mouth to ease the pain, he didn't realize that he was gaining access to its vast knowledge. Finegas generously gave Fionn the fish to eat when he saw that his student was wise. It is said that this gift of wisdom made Fionn a hero and a great leader of the Na Fianna.
