The history of Irish lace… Irish lace has been an important part of the Irish needlework tradition and Irish history. Irish lace is a delicate craft renowned for its ease and sophistication that was born of hunger and severe poverty in Ireland during the early to mid 1800’s. During the great potato famine of the 1840s times were extremely hard for the Irish. The Ursuline nuns who well schooled in Venetian lace realized the prospect that such delicate skills offered to women and their families. When times were tough, women had to lend a hand find in supporting their family. During this period of time, most women knew needlework therefore lace making was just the next step. So The Ursuline nuns taught many girls and women to create the fine crochet that has come to be known as "Irish Lace." It was during this time that the more affluent Irish families that had enough money to buy the pricey lace earned the name of "lace curtain Irish."
